Where do we meet
. . . . WIPS meets the first Monday of
every month from January through May and then again from September
through December. 7 pm in Ricketson Auditorium, Denver Museum of Nature
and Science.
Programs
. . . . . give the members the best opportunity to hear current and
historical developments in paleontology. The speakers are a mix of
professionals and amateurs. Every fall, members are encouraged to
report on their field trips and the October program is usually set
aside for this purpose. We call this program the annual 'show and
tell'.
Volunteer opportunities
. . . . . We have a volunteer
opportunity. The Dinosaur Tracker Museum in St Cajetan's church building. Auraria
campus.
Field trips
. . . . . This year WIPS had more than 16
planned field trips that range from one day family outings to several
days.
The trips are described in detail with dates and contacts.
Newsletter
. . . . .Our publication, Trilobite
Tales comes out monthly except during the summer (9 issues per
year), and is 10-20 pages devoted entirely to paleontology. A typical
issue consists of organization announcements and business including
seminars, classes, field trips, book reviews, one or more feature
articles, and an extensive literature review section on the latest
developments in all areas of paleontology. All issues since 2000 are posted on the web site easily accessible with your userid and password
Education
. . . . . Every other year, WIPS presents a
symposium with a particular paleotological theme. Our next symposium
will take place in 2007. This information is posted on the web site.
Classes
. . . . . WIPS offers a variety of classes
that are as diverse as public speaking to cladistics.
Fund raising
. . . . . Each December, the organization
puts together a fun and very beneficial auction. Everyone is encouraged
to bring their spare fossils and old books and publications. This event
is a silent auction. People who bring items to the auction have an
opportunity to receive a percentage of the sale.
Mission Statement
. . . . . Our Mission shall be scientific,
educational, and charitable and shall provide educational
programs in paleontology and related disciplines. Field trips,
lectures, seminars, and science-related activities are available.
Responsible codes of conduct in the exploration for and collection of
fossils are required for assisting museums, educational institutions
and cooperating with government authorities on state and federal lands.
